Kelley Ian Toombs has been a working designer/art director in the business of visual communications for over 25 years. He has developed brand identities and brand strategies for start-up and Fortune 50-500 companies. Over his career he has served a client base including Dell Computer Corporation, Polycom, Inc., The Psychological Corporation, Concordia University Texas, Fire Bowl Café, Southwest Airlines, SBC, Wal-Mart, as well as multiple state agencies and associations such as Texas Education Agency, Texas Municipal League, Texas Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Store Association, Texas Realtors Association to name a few.
As a versatile and experienced creative director, designer/art director, teacher and mentor Kelley has won numerous local, regional, and national awards in competitions sponsored by Austin Advertising Federation, Austin Graphic Arts Society, Creative Association of San Antonio, Printing Industries of America, International Association of Business Communicators, and American Typographers Association. Kelley’s design work has been published in several of PRINT magazines regional design annuals. He has also received awards for excellence in the creative use of paper by French, Curtis and Fox River paper companies.
Kelley’s roots as a designer began at small design agencies, type houses and printers in the late 70’s where he learned craftsmanship. He graduated from Austin Community College in 1980 and spent two years at GSD&M Advertising preening his skills. Throughout his career, he has taught Graphic Design at ACC and Texas State University. He has served on the McCallum Fine Arts Academy Board, AIGA Texas Board — Conference Chair, AIGA Austin — Founding Board, Advisory Board, Community Outreach and Education Director and the Austin Graphic Arts Society Board — Competition Chair. Kelley presently serves as Vice-President of the Austin Chapter of AIGA and Co-Chair of AIGA Austin’s Design Ranch.
