Carol McCall Sneezing in the hay and cedar

We have moved to Leon County, up north of Bryan. There is a different, yet fertile type of cedar tree. Just this morning, I witnessed "smoke" wafting off a male tree in a gust of wind. Yikes. We hope to be back to the Austin area in the near future, depending on job situation. For now, God is giving us peace and a view. I have joined a writers' group over in Buffalo, a sign of life! Jim Janknegt Exhibit opportunity

The Catholic Diocese of Austin, with St. Edward’s University, would like to invite artists to participate in its twelfth show, Celebrating Sacred Art 2009 – Expressions of Family. Although not a requirement, we encourage artists to create one piece to exhibit that has a family (Holy Family, nuclear family, faith family, etc.) theme. If a finished piece is not possible with this short notice, perhaps a sketch of a proposed family themed project could be included. All artists, new as well as those… Continue

Jim Janknegt A Little Leaven

I finished a painting over the weekend: A Little Leaven based on the parable found in Matthew 13:33 "The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into a large amount of flour until it worked all through the dough." I did this as a commission for Trinity Presbyterian Church in Nashville, TN. If the scheduling works out I may be heading to Nashville for the presentation of the painting to the church. Any suggestions… Continue

Carol McCall What Now?

In reading the newest issue of SEEN from CIVA, I realize that my calling is definitely to the arts and their part in expressing a love for God and a desire to tell others. My vision for an arts center to promote Christian art and non-Christian art here in Cedar Park/Leander remains a possiblity. That came to me without hearing of what was happening in Austin or Greorgetown either one. Now I know both cities are working on an idea. Is there a river I can skate away on anywhere around here? What… Continue

Jim Janknegt Jesus Carries His Cross and Rides a White Horse

I finished two paintings over the weekend. The two paintings actually make up a unit, not exactly a diptyich as they are meant to hang one over the other. The top painting depicts Jesus carrying his cross down a deserted, urban street. The painting is a commentary on how consumerism hinders our acceptance of the suffering and and need… Continue

Jim Janknegt Hand Triptych (The Visitation with Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary

I had the privilege of doing a commission for John and Rebecca (formerly Haskins) Hand for their wedding. The painting was included in their nuptial mass. They choose the Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth as the subject along with the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Sacred Heart of Jesus on either side. The mass fell on the feast of the visitation. Katherine Brimberry The Parodox and Pair o' Ducks Look to the Unknowable

Many years ago a good friend and I talked about paradox. He liked to call it Pair o' Ducks and made the funniest drawing about it. Wish I had it to share. Today I ran across a great quote that kind of speaks to the choir here. I just wanted to share it. The rejection of paradox and ambiguity is the characteristic of heretics in all ages. Heresy is one-dimensional, narrow, over-simplified, and boring. It is straight-line thinking, preferring a pseudo-clarity to the many sidedness of truth, tContinue
